What BMI does and doesn’t tell you

BMI compares weight to height and nothing else. A muscular athlete and someone carrying excess fat can share the same BMI, and it reads differently across ages and ethnic groups. Treat it as one rough signal among several, not a verdict on your health.

BMI doesn’t account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. It’s a general screening tool, not a diagnosis.
